Access Point Name - A gateway to GPRS mobile data services

Blackberry Internet Service - Pushes your internet hosted e-mails (Gmail etc) to your Blackberry handheld

Bytes
Measurement unit for storage
capacity.
Data Card
Provides access to e-mail the internet and internal

Refers to how you can connect devices to each
other, either wirelessly or by cable.
Download
Download id data being transferred, whether it be receiving
e-mails or viewing websites.
GPRS
Allows fast connection to mobile internet with the ability to
download games, sounds and pictures.

The ability to use your phone without holding the mobile
device.
IMAP
Instanst Message Access Protocol - Alternative to POP3.
IMEI
International Mobile Equipment Identifier is a 15 digit number; it is unique to your mobile phone and can
be found on the back of the phone.
Infrared
enables the wireless connectivity to mobile phones,
computers and other devices however, the devices must be very close to each other. This technology is now being fazed out.
ISP
Internet service provider eg. Google/AOL
Kilobytes
A Kilobytes is 1024 Bytes of
data.
LAN
Local Area Network - Office PC's connected together or a small network with printers, faxes
etc.
Megabyte
A Megabyte is 1024 Kilobytes of
data.
Memory
Memory card (small hard drive) placed inside your phone used
to store information such as phone numbers, text messages and pictures (measured in Bytes).
MMS
Multimedia Messaging Service means you can send pictures and videos to other MMS devices.
MP3
Type of music player a mobile phone has (handset dependent).
PAC
If you would like to bring your existing number with you need to get your Port Authorisation Code
(PAC). You need to contact your existing service provider to get it. (PAC codes are generally valid for 30 days).
PDA
Personal Digital Assistant enables you to access calendar information, read e-mails and access the
internet.
PIN
Personal Identification Number enables you to prevent other people making calls on your phone. Check your
phone user guide on how to set up a security PIN.
POP3
Post Office Protocol 3. Used to receive e-mails sent over the internet.
Push E-mail
Use technology to send e-mail messages directly to your
mobile without you having to dial up to receive them.
Roaming
Enables you to make and receive calls on the same mobile
phone when travelling outside of the UK's network.
SIM
Subscriber Identity Module is a tiny card containing your telephone number, your PIN and other information
such as your phone book. A SIM card be moved from phone to phone as it contains all the key information required to activate your phone.
Smartphone
A combination of a Mobile Phone and a Personal Digital
Assistant.
SMS
Short Message Service or text message enables you to send short messages (160 characters) to friends and
colleagues.
Standby Time
The length of time a fully charged phone can be turned
on and ready to make and receive calls. (Usually stated in hours)
Surfing
A common term for viewing more than one webpage on the
internet.
Talk Time
The length of time you can talk on your phone before it
needs to be charged again. (Usually stated in minutes)
Tri Band
Enables your mobile phone to make and receive calls in more
countries (on three different frequencies, 900Mhz, 1800 MHz and the 'American GSM', or PCS 1900Mhz).
WAP
Wireless Application Protocol enables you to see specially tailored internet content to be viewed on the
screen of your mobile or xda.
WLAN
Wireless Local Area Network allows you to wirelessly connect to your e-mail and internet at speeds of up to
11,00 MB.
VPN
Virtual Private Network - A secure connection across the internet
